Manchester United’s season is approaching a pivotal juncture, with the Europa League now the only realistic chance for silverware under Ruben Amorim. After their dramatic FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham, all eyes turn to Thursday’s high-stakes clash against Real Sociedad.
Injury concerns continue to cast a shadow over United’s campaign, with several key players facing uncertain return dates. Here’s the latest on Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, and others as the Red Devils prepare for a crucial European night.
Harry Maguire has defied the odds this season, turning around public perception and re-establishing himself as a defensive leader at Old Trafford. With England’s new manager Thomas Tuchel set to name his first squad soon, there was growing speculation about Maguire’s potential recall.
However, Sunday’s FA Cup tie brought an unwelcome setback. The centre-back was forced off just before extra-time, making way for young Ayden Heaven. Manager Ruben Amorim addressed the issue post-match, admitting:
“I have to see how Harry Maguire is. It’s a tough moment in that aspect, but we have to move on. We will be a competitive team on Thursday.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Kobbie Mainoo has been a revelation this season, but his progress has been interrupted by injury. The young midfielder last featured in early February, with reports suggesting a muscle issue would sideline him for around six weeks.

Despite hopes for a swift return, Amorim has been cautious with updates. Last week, he simply confirmed:
“[Mainoo is] still recovering.”
That lack of clarity suggests his comeback is not imminent, and his availability for the latter stages of the Europa League remains in doubt.
Potential return date: Unknown
Luke Shaw’s persistent injury problems continue to frustrate United fans and coaching staff alike. The England international has barely featured in over a year, with repeated setbacks derailing any momentum.
Having returned to training earlier this year, hopes were high that Shaw could play a role in United’s run-in. However, a fresh muscle issue last month has put him back on the sidelines. Amorim recently admitted he had no firm timeline for Shaw’s return.
Potential return date: Unknown
Mason Mount’s United career has yet to take off. The former Chelsea star has been plagued by injuries and has not featured since suffering a hamstring problem in the December victory over Manchester City.
Amorim has confirmed Mount is “continuing his recovery,” but there is no firm return date.
Potential return date: Unknown
One bright spot for United has been the emergence of young Toby Collyer. Despite missing the recent defeat to Tottenham with an unspecified issue, Amorim has suggested he is nearing a comeback.
Potential return date: March/April 2025
Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was in contention for the FA Cup tie against Fulham but has been dealing with an undisclosed problem since February. No update has been provided on his condition.
Potential return date: Unknown
One of United’s few standout performers this season, Amad Diallo, has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign. The winger suffered an ankle ligament injury in training last month.

Amorim confirmed:
“Amad is out, for sure, I think until the end of season. Amad was alone [when he got injured]. He was doing a tackle. The feet were stuck in the grass.”
Potential return date: Summer 2025
Veteran defender Jonny Evans has been out since December with a calf injury, while Lisandro Martinez’s ACL problem means he is set for an extended spell on the sidelines. It remains unclear whether the Argentine will be fit for the start of next season.
Potential return dates: Unknown
With so many key players out of action, Ruben Amorim faces a tough task in keeping United competitive. The upcoming Europa League tie against Real Sociedad will be a significant test of the squad’s depth and resilience.
If United are to salvage anything from this season, they will need Maguire, Mainoo, and Shaw back in action as soon as possible. But with return dates still uncertain, the Red Devils’ path forward remains as unpredictable as ever.
