Man United ‘leading’ race for Crystal Palace defender Mitchell

Manchester United are reportedly ‘leading’ the race to sign Tyrick Mitchell from Crystal Palace as leading clubs eye a cut-price deal for the defender.

Mitchell’s contract at Palace expires at the end of the season, though the Eagles do have the option to extend for a further season. A number of top clubs are monitoring Mitchell’s situation ahead of a potential move in the January transfer window, including Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Manchester United want to bring in a left-back to provide competition and cover for Luke Shaw, having failed to add another defender to their squad late in the summer. Shaw played all 38 league games last season, but United’s return to European competition has increased the workload on a player whose career has been punctuated by fitness issues.

Transfer insider Ekrem Konur is claiming the Red Devils are leading the race for Mitchell and are prepared to tempt Palace with an offer of around £25m in January. It remains to be seen whether the South Londoners consider that bid, given Mitchell’s deal can be extended until 2028.

Mitchell came through the academy at Selhurst Park and has made 250 senior appearances for Palace, winning the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Europa Conference League. The 27-year-old has two caps for England, both of which came in 2022.
