Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has spoken out about Barcelona’s summer signing Marcus Rashford, reacting to the forward’s recent comments about his struggles in the final years at Old Trafford.

Rashford had defended himself, claiming that his dip in form was due to being “in an inconsistent environment for a long time.” Rooney, however, did not take kindly to these remarks.

The English legend addressed the issue on a BBC podcast, stating, “I think the environment has not been right. I talked about this a few weeks ago, but that’s his fault.

“If you don’t play well or if you’re left out of the team, I think it’s easier to blame the environment.

“That depends on how hard you work. In the games we’ve seen him play, where we know he can do more, we know he can run more; that has nothing to do with the environment.

“I may be wrong, but I really like Marcus as a person, but I think it’s easy to say that to people.”

Much-needed fresh start

Rooney’s criticism centres on the idea that Rashford’s challenges at Manchester United were not solely the result of his surroundings.

According to the former United captain, the responsibility also lay with Rashford’s own performance on the pitch.

Having shared a locker room with the young striker during his rise at Old Trafford, Rooney knows Rashford’s abilities firsthand.

While he praised Rashford as a person, he made it clear that blaming the environment for inconsistent form is “easy to say,” implying that the player’s effort and consistency were equally important factors.

For Barcelona, Rashford’s arrival offers a fresh start and an opportunity to prove himself at the highest level once again.

Despite Rooney’s criticism, the English forward has shown glimpses of his potential in La Liga, and the Catalan club will be hoping he can finally deliver the consistency that eluded him in his latter years at Manchester United.
