It is safe to say that INEOS have let Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick down ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.

Yes, the co-owners have revamped the midfield, but a cursory glance at the left-back position shows how badly the Red Devils lack depth.

Luke Shaw cannot be trusted to stay fit for the whole campaign, while his recent performances have raised several question marks.

Add to this Harry Amass’ impending departure, and United could be left short in case of an injury. It has been surprising to note INEOS’ apathy towards the left-back slot.

Defensive overhaul in the works

After failing to land Lewis Hall from Newcastle, the 20-time English league champions are currently only pursuing loan deals even though both David Raum and Alejandro Balde were there for the taking.

The same goes for the backline, with Matthijs de Ligt currently injured and Lisandro Martinez struggling for form and fitness.

Harry Maguire is no spring chicken, and it is obvious that Carrick could have done with at least one new signing instead of a full-blown revamp.

According to The Sun, INEOS’ plan is to revamp the backline next summer, like they did with the attack last year, and the midfield this time around.

All but two United players fighting for their lives

Samuel Luckhurst claims United are open to the departures of multiple defenders as they seek to sign as many as three new defensive recruits.

With the exception of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, all the other United defenders will be playing for their futures this season.

INEOS leaking their plans on purpose

The contracts of Shaw, Maguire and Martinez all end next summer, with the club having the option of triggering an extension in the case of both centre-backs.

This reads an awful lot like United leaking their plans on purpose as a sort of damage control to try and appease an exasperated fanbase.
