Manchester United were embarrassed to a 2-0 Premier League defeat by Newcastle United in the New Year Eve’s clash.

The Red Devils were left stunned in the first half as the visitors struck twice within the opening 20 minutes.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton bullied United’s defence to ensure the home crowd booed their own players at the break.

The hosts gain more control in the second half as they switched to a 5-4-1 formation.

They came close to scoring twice but failed to find the net.

United remained in the 14th spot in the league table after recording their fourth consecutive defeat.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 4/10

Like always, Onana was rooted to his line for the two Newcastle goals.

Noussair Mazraoui – 2/10

A disastrous first half performance from a player who had been outstanding in the opening months.

Both goals came from his flank as he woefully failed to cut out the crosses.

Matthijs de Ligt – 3/10

He clearly struggled in the right centre-back spot against the quick movement of the opposition.

Harry Maguire – 5/10

The England international failed to command his box in the first half.

He came close to scoring but hit the post.

Lisandro Martinez – 2/10

He wore the captain’s armband but forgot what it means to lead a team.

He failed to track Isak for the first goal and was bullied in the air by Joelinton for the second strike.

Diogo Dalot – 4/10

A good cross in million years to find Maguire who hit the post.

Casemiro – 2/10

The veteran was absolutely awful with his ball distribution. Mainoo served him a goal on platter but he miscued a simple shot.

He was the worst player on the pitch. United have to offload him in the summer.

Christian Eriksen – 4/10

Eriksen and Casemiro lost all control in the midfield. He attempted to make United tick but his efforts proved insufficient.

Amad Diallo – 5/10

He was the only United player, alongside Kobbie Mainoo, who showed genuine passion for the shirt. However, he had little quality to match his effort.

Joshua Zirkzee – 2/10

The Dutch forward was substituted around the half-hour mark, with the home supporters greeting his departure with cheers.

While one might feel sympathy for him, his lackluster performances have done little to win over the crowd.

Rasmus Hojlund – 3/10

He made a fine run in the first half but should have slotted it home for United.

It seemed like he fell to the ground more times in a duel than he passed the ball.

Substitutions

Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10

Mainoo instantly improved United at the base of the midfield after his early introduction. He should have started the game.

Leny Yoro – 6/10

He was just a few inches away from scoring his first goal in the United shirt.

Alejandro Garnacho – 4/10

Garnacho has lost his confidence. He made no impact from the bench.

Antony – NA

Too late to rate.
