Manchester United mat look to exploit Inter Milan’s crippling debt to sign electric forward Marcus Thuram.

The Red Devils have struggled for goals all season, having only been able to find the net 52 times in 34 Premier League games so far. This means they are one of the lowest scoring teams in the Premier League as they are the joint lowest scorers in the top half alongside Bournemouth.

Rasmus Hojlund has experienced an up and down debut year where he has suffered extended goal droughts and injury but, on the plus side, has also managed to find the back of the net 14 times in his first season in England.

In a desperately unfair situation, the 21 year old has been asked to lead the line of a malfunctioning attack as Anthony Martial has been injured the majority of the season and Marcus Rashford has desperately struggled to find any sort of form, outside or rare moments of magic, such as his goal versus Manchester City at the Etihad last month.

Therefore, one of the highest priorities on INEOS’ agenda is signing a new striker to take the pressure off Hojlund, with names such as Ivan Toney, Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee all linked to United.

Consequently, Spanish outlet Fichajes have also linked the Red Devils to a familiar name from last summer – Marcus Thuram.

United were linked to the striker when he was available on a free transfer, but he ended up moving to Inter Milan instead. The move can certainly be described as a success as the player scored 14 goals in 43 matches and Inter won the Serie A title in his debut campaign.

However, Fichajes claim that Inter’s financial issues mean the player could well be for sale and would attract the likes of Manchester United.

“Behind this sporting glory lie significant financial challenges for the club. Despite their success on the field, with recent titles and outstanding performances in European competitions, Inter face a considerable debt that requires immediate attention.”

“The club’s financial picture reflects a debt of €275 million, along with additional interest of €100 million, which must be paid before the end of the season. In addition, additional loans totalling almost €400 million are coming by 2027.”

This leads us onto Thuram and the Spanish website claims, “the French striker has impressed in his debut season and his market valuation makes him a desired target for clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. Inter could be forced to consider offers for him.”

The 26 year old would certainly bring something different to the Red Devils’ front line.

His “movement is one of his greatest strengths – his bursts of pace and explosive moments are often too quick for his opponents. He holds his position well, and he does not always get drawn towards play, but instead adopts positions that makes it difficult for defenders to see both him and the ball.”

Crucially, Thuram is described as “both a goal scorer and a creator rolled into one” – a perfect compliment to Hojlund, rather than an unhelpful competitor.

Therefore, if United can get the player on a deal below market value, it would be a smart acquisition in a summer where numerous holes need to be fixed, within a wider context of financial limitations due to a lack of Champions League football at Old Trafford next season.
