Fellow January arrival, Ellen Wangerheim, was on the bench.

First half

United got off to the perfect start when captain Maya Le Tissier fired an unstoppable rocket into the top corner to give Marc Skinner’s side a 1-0 lead.

Jess Park almost doubled the Reds’ lead, but her fine effort curled narrowly wide of the post.

Next, it was the turn of Simi Awujo to test the Clarets’ keeper. Her right-footed effort was well stopped by Kirstie Levell.

The game lulled a little, but this was soon interrupted when Julia Olme fired in United’s second from inside the box. It was the Swede’s first goal for the club and the least she deserves after a fantastic debut campaign for the Red Devils.

Schuller almost added a third goal with a header from a corner, but it drifted just wide. After 28 minutes, Jess Park once again tried her luck, this time with her left foot, but the ball curled wide.

Melvine Malard was next to test the Burnley keeper, but the Frenchwoman was denied. United did not have to wait long for their third, though, as Awujo fired a right-footed shot into the top corner to all but kill off the game for the Red Devils after just 35 minutes.

In the 44th minute, Malard almost scored her first goal of the match, but her header cannoned off the crossbar. The half-time whistle blew with United in complete control against their lower-league opponents.

Second half

United started the second half in exactly the same fashion as the first, scoring after just two minutes.

The ball was played across the goal by Dominique Janssen and new signing Lea Schuller headed home her first goal for the club. Burnley finally had an effort on goal, but Millie Ravening’s shot from 35 yards did not threaten Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Lisa Naalsund tried her luck from range, but her effort drifted over the bar. Awujo continued her strong match and had a shot blocked just before the hour mark.

Elisabeth Terland replaced Schuller and almost made an instant impact, hitting the post with a header from a corner. The magic of the cup was in full flight when 16-year-old Layla Drury came off the bench to add United’s fifth.

Her fine left-footed shot found the top corner and gave her her first senior goal in incredible fashion.

Ellen Wangerheim was also brought on and almost made it a quadruple of first United goals, but her header was saved by the keeper.

There was a worrying moment when Terland clashed with the Burnley keeper in added time and both needed medical attention.

The game concluded with United easing through to the next round. Marc Skinner’s side will now look forward to Wednesday evening when they take on Arsenal in the semi-final of the League Cup.
