Manchester United midfielder Dominique Janssen has blamed being “too passive” for the club’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester City last weekend.

United sunk by City

United were brutally brought back down to reality after their historic Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in mid-week.

They were subjected to a third consecutive loss of the WSL season, having gone unbeaten in their first seven fixtures.

City scored all three goals during the opening 45 minutes. The hosts took the lead through Rebecca Knaak, who headed home after Bunny Shaw got the better of Elisabeth Terland to direct the ball in her direction.

United’s cross-town rivals doubled their advantage on 43 minutes via Shaw. The 31-year-old capitalised on some lethargic defending from Janssen to make it 2-0.

City put the game to bed just before the break courtesy of Lauren Hemp.

United remain in third place in the league standings, seven points below table leaders City.

After the final whistle, Janssen spoke to the media and said that she and her teammates were “too passive” before vowing to make amends.

Jannsen’s remarks

The Dutch star said [as quoted by Hayters], “We didn’t start off great.”

“I think we were way too passive. The goals we conceded were way too easy. We have to just assess it and look at it. We know we have to do better next time.”

She added, “We said it’s not good enough and we have to review it together.”

“It’s not going to be a nice review but we have to do it to get better. The next game is coming quick so we have to get ready and go on.”

United are back in action when they face Wolfsburg in a Champions League contest at AOK Stadion.
