Manchester United claimed a much-needed 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford, with first-half strikes from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko providing a morale-boosting result for the Red Devils.
The hosts started brightly and didn’t take long to break the deadlock. Mount, picking up a clever pass from Bryan Mbeumo, controlled before curling a left-footed finish into the bottom corner just eight minutes in - his first league goal at Old Trafford.
Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs kept his side in the game with several fine saves in the first hald, including tipping a Bruno Fernandes strike onto the bar.
United doubled their lead on the half-hour mark. Diogo Dalot’s long throw caused confusion in the Sunderland box, and Sesko reacted quickest to poke the ball home from close range, netting his second goal for the club, giving the hosts a comfortable cushion.
The Black Cats had a late penalty appeal before half-time, but VAR overturned it, allowing United to head into the break with a two-goal advantage.
The second half saw Regis Le Bris' side make several attacking changes, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Matheus Cunha headed narrowly wide, while Chemsdine Talbi was denied by debutant goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who impressed on his first Premier League outing. Lammens made several key saves late on, helping United keep their first clean sheet of the season.
The victory lifts United up to eighth in the Premier League and marks a boost of confidence after last weekend’s defeat at Brentford. It also secured a personal milestone for Ruben Amorim, who celebrated his 50th game in charge with a win.
