Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur served up a thrilling encounter that will have the visitors furious that they threw away a three-goal lead.

After a humbling defeat in the Champions League against OL Lyonnes midweek, United looked refreshed and had plenty of opportunities to take the lead before being hit by a Spurs sucker punch.

Olivia Holdt sent in a fine ball from the right that Beth England headed in from close range. It was 2-0 just before the break with Ashleigh Neville this time setting up Eveliina Summanen.

Amazingly, United had hit the woodwork three times in the first 45 minutes but found themselves trailing by two goals.

It was 3-0 with just over an hour gone. Former United forward Martha Thomas had not scored in just under two years in the WSL but she managed to extend her side's lead after another assist from Holdt.

From that point, Spurs should have seen out the game but the home side came roaring back.

Ella Toone reduced the deficit in the 74th minute with a clever finish before substitute Fridolina Rolfö scored United's second with just eight minutes of regular time to play.

At this point it was a frantic game and in the fourth minute of stoppage Leah Galton lofted across to the back post that Rolfö was again on hand to finish.

The result does mean that United finish the weekend fourth, a point behind Arsenal who won away to Everton on Saturday, and still one ahead of Spurs.
