Manchester United have announced Michael Carrick as permanent manager on a two-year contract, following five months as interim manager.

The former United midfielder arrived at Old Trafford following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, and got off to a flying start, beating Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two games in charge.

“Manchester United are delighted to announce that Michael Carrick will continue as head coach of the men’s first team, having signed a new contract which will run to 2028,” the club announced on Friday.

United have won 11 of 16 games played under Carrick, accumulating the highest points tally in the Premier League since his appointment, and securing a return to Champions League football.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” Carrick said. “Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”

The former England midfielder spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player, making 464 appearances and winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup.
