Manchester United recently contacted representatives of Chelsea attacking midfielder Christopher Nkunku ahead of a summer move, according to L’Equipe.

The Red Devils are keen on reinforcing the attacking positions in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up.

They have identified the Chelsea ace as a target alongside Antoine Semenyo and Bryan Mbeumo.

The Frenchman joined the Blues two seasons ago and was hailed as one of the standout attacking players in European football.

However, Nkunku’s time at Chelsea has been disappointing.

He spent a chunk of his first season in England sidelined and suffered the same fate at the beginning of this campaign.

Nkunku still bagged 14 goals and five assists this season in 43 appearances for Chelsea but failed to nail down a spot as a starter ahead of Nicolas Jackson or Cole Palmer.

The former RB Leipzig attacker spent most of the season filling gaps in the absence of Chelsea’s first-choice players.

He is keen on leaving Chelsea for a stomping ground where he will play a more prominent role.

Now, Manchester United have entered the frame even though the report claims they have not submitted a bid, only initial contacts.

The versatile Chelsea star will be a better fit for the Man Utd system.

The 3-4-2-1 allows him to operate on the left (but not on the flank) and close to the number 10 position, off a main striker.

Nkunku can also work in a 3-5-2 up top if Amorim ever wants to put more bodies in midfield.

As for Chelsea, they have been looking for a replacement for the 27-year-old.

Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt), Joao Pedro (Brighton & Hove Albion), and Mohammed Kudus (West Ham United) are on their shortlist.

The Blues could do without a replacement for Nkunku. He was already surplus to requirements, but the West Londoners seem bent on acquiring another versatile forward.
