Fabrizio Romano has deleted his X/Twitter post announcing that Marcus Rashford would be wearing the No.14 shirt next season, suggesting INEOS have U-turned on the decision.
For Manchester United’s pre-season clash with AC Milan on Saturday, which marked the forward’s first minutes in a Red Devils shirt since December 2024, he wore the No.9.
Either way, clarification over his number will have to be set in stone this week due to United kicking off their 2026/2027 Premier League campaign on Saturday afternoon.
The No.10 jersey that he wore from August 2018 until his departure to Aston Villa in February 2025 has since been claimed by 2025 summer signing Matheus Cunha.
He certainly did the iconic digits justice throughout his maiden term by returning 10 goals and four assists in his 35 appearances for the club.
Although Rashford featured at the weekend, it still isn’t guaranteed that he sees out the season at Old Trafford.
It’s thought that United chiefs would facilitate his departure before the deadline if a suitable offer arrived.
However, doing so would leave them little time to secure a replacement, with one attacking target, Crysencio Summerville, already being snapped up by Al Hilal.
In the meantime, Michael Carrick is more than happy to have the 28-year-old added to his ranks ahead of his first full campaign as manager, and it’s clear to see why; Rashford notched a hugely impressive 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona throughout his loan spell.
That’s why it came as such a surprise that the Blaugrana opted against activating his £26 million buy option, instead deciding to shell out a whopping £69.3m on Anthony Gordon and, later, £19m on Karim Adeyemi.
