Fabrizio Romano has explained why Manchester United now have a 50 percent chance of signing Barcelona left-back, Alejandro Balde.

Man Utd have almost wrapped up their midfield rebuild, with Carlos Baleba primed to arrive in a £70m switch. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already been banked and both new recruits were sleected to start United’s Premier League opener against Hull on Saturday afternoon.

With the midfield ticked off, it’s full steam ahead for a major arrival at left-back. United’s top target is Lewis Hall, though he’s unlikely in the extreme to be on the move.

Newcastle are refusing to sell having already waved goodbye to three of their best players this summer (Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon).

Man Utd aren’t throwing in the towel just yet, though transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, has already insisted there’s no deal to be made in this window at least.

He stated on Friday: “They wanted Lewis Hall, but it was not possible to proceed because Newcastle don’t want to sell the player.”

As such, the Red Devils must explore alternatives and earlier this week, they called super agent Jorge Mendes to enquire about Alejandro Balde.

The Barcelona left-back, 22, doesn’t want to leave the Camp Nou. However, Barca would be willing to cash in if an offer too good to refuse is received.

And if a club-to-club agreement is struck, the suggestion is Balde could change his mind and agree to leave. As far as prestige, Balde certainly wouldn’t be embarking on a step down if moving to Man Utd.

Detailing the latest on Balde’s situation on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “For Balde it’s a 50/50 situation, because in case of a good proposal Balde could still leave Barcelona.

“But what I can tell you is the player is not pushing to go. So just to give you context, there was a call this week between Jorge Mendes and Man Utd.

“Man Utd are looking for a left-back and they were asking for the conditions of the deal.

“Mendes was considering this possibility, but the player is not pushing to go. And it’s not about rejecting [Man Utd].

“The player is very happy in Barcelona and would love to compete for his spot in Barcelona.

“So the only way to see Balde leaving Barcelona between now and the end of the season is if its Barca telling Balde ‘okay, we need to sell you, we want to sell you.’ That’s the only way.

“Man Utd are informed on the conditions and as of today, they’ve not returned with any official bid.”

Other, more modestly-priced left-backs on Man Utd’s radar include Joaquin Seys (Club Brugge) and Jorge Salinas (Racing Santander).
