Jaap Stam wants to see Harry Maguire continue at Manchester United beyond his contract expiring in the summer.

At the turn of the year, United’s No.5 entered the final five months of his deal at Old Trafford, meaning he is currently free to talk to foreign clubs over a potential move at the end of the season.

Maguire has spent a large portion of the campaign navigating injury problems, which may have deterred INEOS from wanting to offer him fresh terms.

However, upon his return to the fold, he has been nothing short of outstanding.

The 32-year-old has started and played the full 90 minutes in the first two matches of Michael Carrick’s tenure, with United overseeing emphatic wins over the top two in the league, Arsenal and Manchester City.

For the game against the former last Sunday, Maguire claimed the Man of the Match award following a ‘colossal’ display at the Emirates.

He’ll now be hoping that his stellar form ensures he retains his place when Matthijs de Ligt is back in the fold, given United only have one game a week to account for from now until May.

Casemiro, whose contract also expires in the summer, announced last week that he would indeed be departing M16 when June rolls around.

As things stand, Maguire’s future is one that’s hugely uncertain – but Stam is keen for the England international to stay put.

“Maguire has had a very difficult time at Manchester United in the last couple of years, so I have a lot of respect for him and the way he has come back into the team, looked top-notch and performed to a high level,” the former Red told the Metro.

“That’s a very important example for the club, to have players who are trustworthy and solid performers. It’s very important to keep players like that within the squad. He’s got bags of experience and knows what is expected of players at a club like United.

“I understand that sometimes you need to make space in your squad to bring in new players, but there needs to be a balance between experience and youth. Maguire is the ideal person to stay at United, to play but also to help his team-mates reach and maintain high levels.”
