It was a night of European heartache for Celtic as they lost 5-1 after extra-time to LASK to exit the UEFA Champions League, suffering a 5-4 aggregate defeat to the Austrian side.

Celtic’s 3-0 first-leg lead was extended by a first-half Callum McGregor goal, but LASK levelled the game before half-time, and then scored three second-half goals to take the game into extra-time when they scored the all-important fifth goal to put them through.

Martin O’Neill and his players were left to reflect on a ‘major disappointment, with the Celtic manager admitting that it was a terrible night.

“We should have the game out of sight,” he said. “We missed some glorious chances and we gave them a lifeline just before half-time and then just after half-time again.

“So it gave them momentum and they carried that momentum for some time. I thought we were going to see it through.

"We didn't do it at the end and that's my responsibility. It’s the most disappointing night I’ve had in a long, long time.”
