Manchester City have been comprehensively beaten in the FA Community Shield today by Arsenal at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Riccardo Calafiori’s goal after 25 seconds set the tone and Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard also scored to secure an impressive win for Mikel Arteta’s side. There were brief glimpses shown by Enzo Maresca’s side, however it will take time for Maresca’s vision and system to come together, which stood out today.

When the starting lineups were announced, Enzo Maresca selected arguably his strongest available starting eleven. Elliot Anderson was named in the starting lineup. Anderson would make his City debut against Arsenal. Up front, Erling Haaland started as Maresca was clearly going for the win and also using today’s match as an opportunity to accelerate his team’s process of getting used to his methods.

First half.

Arsenal took the lead after 25 seconds. Mikel Arteta’s side went straight at Manchester City from kickoff and an early cross from the left was cleared by the City defence. The ball was recycled by Arsenal and Myles Lewis-Skelley split the City defence with a through ball to Riccardo Calafriori. The Italian defender beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a composed finish to give Mikel Arteta’s side an early lead. Gianluigi Donnarumma didn’t cover himself in glory with his attempt to save Calafiori’s shot but he was left exposed by Lewis-Skelley’s ball that split the City defence.

As the game entered the 10th minute, it was an end-to-end affair. Enzo Maresca’s side were sloppy in possession, with Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic both guilty of giving away possession that led to Arsenal counterattacks. However, the City defence dealt with both of Arsenal’s breaks adequately to snuff out any danger.

As the match ticked over 15 minutes of play, it had settled down after a fast and furious opening. Arsenal had two corners that the City defence dealt with, and Enzo Maresca’s side were beginning to enjoy spells of possession. However, neither side created any openings other than a superb Elliot Anderson cross from the right that was just too far ahead of Erling Haaland in the 18th minute.

David Raya makes an impressive double save to deny Manchester City an equalizer.

Manchester City would have their first shot on target in the 20th minute. A well-worked City move saw Phil Foden picked out in acres of space on the edge of the Arsenal area. Foden curled in a low drive from 20 yards out at the far post which David Raya got down well to his right to save. Nico O’Reilly won back possession on the left and teed up Erling Haaland to shoot. Raya denied Haaland at the near post. However, Haaland’s shot was for nought as Nico O’Reilly was adjudged to have pushed the Arsenal defender when winning back possession.

Arsenal double their lead as City’s defence falls asleep.

Mikel Arteta’s side would make it 2-0 in the 28th minute. Martin Ødegaard floated in a good cross from the right to the back post. Abdukodir Khusanov was unaware of Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis coming in behind him. Tzolis headed the ball back across goal, which allowed Kai Havertz to head home from five yards out. Gianluigi Donnarumma did get to the ball, but it squirmed under him to double Arsenal’s lead. It was a poor goal for City to concede and Donnarumma’s attempt to save Havertz’s header summed it all up from a City point of view.

Jeremy Doku would slip Erling Haaland in behind the Arsenal defence in the 36th minute. However, Haaland would fire a right-footed shot from a great position high and wide of the target. That opening was created by Doku, who cut inside with plenty of space in which to operate. It was the first real opportunity that either City winger had to create a chance. Arsenal’s defence had done extremely well to deny Manchester City’s wingers any room to show what they are capable of.

Somehow Manchester City are denied a goal.

David Raya made a strong save to deny Erling Haaland in the 39th minute. Elliot Anderson played a great ball from the right to the left wing, which picked out Jeremy Doku in acres of space. Doku played a great through ball to Haaland, who got a strong shot on target, which David Raya got down well to save. Manchester City created another opening and the ball was played from the right to Jeremy Doku, whose shot from close range was blocked over the bar courtesy of some desperate defending by Ben White.

Riccardo Calafriori would fire a volley over the bar in the 43rd minute. Arsenal created a good chance from the right which saw Ben White pick out Calafriori at the back post. However, Calafriori fired his volley over the bar. What was a concern for Enzo Maresca’s side was how often Calafriori was getting forward from left-back and finding space unmarked.

Arsenal almost made it 3-0 right on the stroke of halftime. A cross from the left wasn’t dealt with at all well by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Donnarumma only managed to push the ball back into danger. Martin Ødegaard got a tame shot on target which Josko Gvardiol cleared off the line. That moment would be the final significant action of the first half.

Thoughts on Manchester City’s first half performance.

Arsenal were good value for their 2-0 halftime lead. Mikel Arteta’s side did have more cutting edge to their play and Enzo Maresca’s side were struggling to contain them. Gianluigi Donnarumma’s first half performance was poor, which was a concern. However, the amount of time that City were allowing the Arsenal players to have in possession and the failure to track the runs of Riccardo Calafiori were a major cause for concern. Also, Manchester City’s defence was far too open, which didn’t aid Donnarumma’s cause.

In possession, City did have their moments. Elliot Anderson made a bright start to his Manchester City career and he was probably the best-performing City player in the first half. Enzo Maresca would have been disappointed to see a lack of threat from his wingers and Maresca had his work cut out for him to lift his side back into the contest in the second half.

Second half.

Enzo Maresca would bring on Jack Grealish at halftime. Grealish would replace Jeremy Doku. After spending last season out on loan at Everton, Grealish did appear to have been offered a lifeline by Enzo Maresca to try and show if there was any life left in his Manchester City career.

Martin Ødegaard makes it 3-0 to Arsenal.

It would only take Arsenal three second half minutes to make it 3-0. Manchester City lost possession in midfield which allowed Arsenal to break. The ball was played out wide to Christos Tzolis on the left wing. Tzolis had plenty of time to pick out Martin Ødegaard with a quality ball who cruised past Josko Gvardiol who went to ground far too early and Ødegaard beat Donnarumma with ease to give Arsenal a 3-0 lead. Every issue from the first half was on full display to begin the second half.

As the game ticked over the hour-mark, the sting had well and truly faded out of the game. Manchester City were having good spells of possession but with no end product. The Arsenal fans were enjoying their moment and their singing and enthusiasm was by far and away the most energetic moment of the second half following Martin Ødegaard’s 48th minute strike.

Both teams looked to be playing for the final whistle as the game entered the final 20 minutes.

Manchester City did have a prolonged spell of possession in between the 60th and 70th minutes. Although, Arsenal were allowing City to have the ball as Mikel Arteta’s side were happy to hold onto their lead and look to pick Enzo Maresca’s side off on the break. Rayan Cherki would force a good save from David Raya in the 72nd minute as Cherki fired in a low right-footed drive from 25 yards out which Raya got down well to save.

Bukayo Saka would almost make it 4-0 for Arsenal in the 79th minute. Piero Hincapié played a great ball from the left which Saka fired over from 8 yards out. Antoine Semenyo would see a shot well saved by David Raya up the other end a minute later after Rayan Cherki dribbled his way through the Arsenal defence to set up Semenyo for a shot on the right, well inside the Arsenal area.

The final stages of the match played out without incident. Arsenal thoroughly deserved their 3-0 win as Mikel Arteta’s side looked a level above Enzo Maresca’s side at this moment in time.

Thoughts from the second half and from Manchester City’s overall performance.

Once Martin Ødegaard made it 3-0 in the 48th minute the game was over. Manchester City did enjoy large spells of possession throughout the second half but there wasn’t a lot to take from that performance.

Overall, Enzo Maresca’s side is a work in progress. That will remain the case throughout the early stages of the 2026-27 season. City had a host of players who looked underdone and who should be better for the run out. What is evident is patience will be needed while Maresca embeds his philosophy in. Arsenal looked like a side today who knows their system, tactics, and strengths. While City are beginning a new journey and that was impossible to ignore in Cardiff. There are clear areas for City to improve and that is the biggest takeaway from today’s FA Community Shield clash.

Manchester City player perfromance thoughts and observations.

Gianluigi Donnarumma- A poor performance from Donnarumma. He should have done better on each of Arsenal’s first two goals. He remains a work in progress with the ball at his feet.

Abdukodir Khusanov- Khusanov really struggled on the right side of City’s defence. It wasn’t a role he looked suited to.

Ruben Dias- Dias got through the game but like his team, he struggled against Arsenal’s quality attacking play.

Josko Gvardiol- What is clear with Gvardiol is he is still finding his feet after a lengthy injury lay-off last season.

Nico O’Reilly- O’Reilly got through the minutes he had to without really getting heavily involved in the match.

Mateo Kovacic- -The Croatian midfielder doesn’t look suited to the role he is being asked to play. He was good in possession but his positioning out of possession needs to improve.

Elliot Anderson- Anderson was probably Manchester City’s best player while he was on the pitch. The bar was low for that title it must be said. He got into good positions when City had possession and showed enough glimpses of what he will eventually become.

Phil Foden- Not his best display. Foden had one good opportunity to score but in possession he lost the ball too often. Plenty of room for improvement to come from Foden judging by today’s display. 

Antoine Semenyo- A subdued display from Semenyo. He didn’t offer much of a threat on the right wing until the sting came out of the game.

Jeremy Doku- Obviously the plan was for Doku to only play 45 minutes. He was the livelier of the two City wingers and he should be better for the run-out.

Erling Haaland- -A typical Haaland performance in the FA Community Shield. He had his chances but he wasn’t at his sharpest.

Substitutes.

Jack Grealish- It was nice to see Grealish in a Manchester City shirt again. He got on the ball a bit and put in one good cross.

Omar Marmoush- He was lively after coming on but lacked service.

Marc Guehi- Guehi was probably the most composed City defender and should start against Bournemouth.

Rayan Cherki- Cherki was by far and away Manchester City’s most dangerous attacking player after coming off the bench. If it is a choice between he and Foden to start against Bournemouth, Cherki has to start.

Rico Lewis- Lewis didn’t really get into the game after coming on.

Nico Gonzalez- Nico didn’t have time to make an impression. However, if Maresca wants a double pivot in midfield next weekend it should be Nico and Elliot Anderson starting.
