Here are the City player ratings as Manchester City fell to a familiar defeat at Villa Park. Matty Cash’s 19th-minute goal was enough for Unai Emery’s side to end Manchester City’s nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions with a 1-nil win for Aston Villa.
The game was a frustrating one for Pep Guardiola’s side. Aston Villa dominated the first half, and City held on to go into the interval a goal down. Pep Guardiola’s side upped the ante in the second half but Aston Villa’s determined defending denied City an equaliser and in truth the result was a fair one on the day. The City player ratings reflect City’s performance which had flashes of quality but they didn’t do enough to find an equaliser at Villa Park.
Gianluigi Donnarumma-7.5/10: Made three crucial saves in the second half to keep his team in the game.
Matheus Nunes-6.5/10: Did what he has to do without being spectacular. He wasn’t Manchester City’s worst player on the day.
John Stones-5.5/10: Played his preferred role of dropping into midfield from centre-back when City had possession. Wasn’t his best display as Aston Villa played through and over Manchester City’s midfield too often.
Ruben Dias-7/10: Made several crucial blocks and did his job well at the back under fierce Villa pressure, especially in the first half.
Josko Gvardiol-5.5/10: Not his best performance and he doesn’t look as comfortable playing left-back as he does playing centre-back.
Tijjani Reijnders-5/10: Played as a number six for the first hour but that position doesn’t suit his game. Too often was played over or around in midfield. Not his best performance.
Bernardo Silva-5.5/10: Took up some dangerous positions at times in the final third but couldn’t get into the game often enough.
Oscar Bobb-4/10: The young winger couldn’t get into the game before he was substituted. Not his best showing.
Phil Foden-6.5/10: An almost day for Foden. Almost cut open the Villa defence at the beginning of the game he saw several shots blocked.
Savinho-6/10: The Brazilian international got into several dangerous positions but his end product wasn’t there. He saw two goal bound efforts blocked which could have changed the game for Savinho and his team.
Erling Haaland- 5.5/10: Saw one shot saved in the first half when he should have scored. Haaland looked laboured in his movement today. Never stopped trying but lacked the quality service he needs to thrive.
Nico-7/10: Manchester City looked better when Nico was on the pitch. Put himself about and took up dangerous positions in the final third.
Jeremy Doku-6/10: Got himself into dangerous positions but his crosses were either blocked or just out of reach of his teammates.
Nico O’Reilly-6/10: Made a difference after coming off the bench. Got into dangerous positions and did create chances for his team.
Rayan Cherki-N/A: Not on long enough to mark but I’d have liked to have seen Cherki come on earlier. Perhaps he isn’t fully fit yet.
Omar Marmoush-N/A: -Not on long enough to mark but was caught offside when it seemed he had set up an equaliser for Erling Haaland.
