Manchester City 1 (Ruben Dias 68′)

Newcastle United 2 (Harvey Barnes 63′, 70′)

Here are the City player ratings as Manchester City fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat to a dogged and determined Newcastle side at St. James Park. A second half brace from Harvey Barnes was enough for the hosts to pick up all three points in a thoroughly entertaining Premier League fixture. Ruben Dias did equalise for City in the second half but in the end Newcastle did enough to pick up a valuable three points.

Manchester City will be frustrated at themselves for squandering a host of good chances throughout the game. Although it must be said that Newcastle did create the games best chances and deserved their win.

The City player ratings reflect City’s performance which was frustrating in a game that they needed to win for their own self-belief.

Gianluigu Donnarumma-7.5/10: Made several stunning saves to keep his team in the game. Perhaps could’ve done better for Newcastle’s winner but I felt that Donnarumma was Manchester City’s best player on the day.

Matheus Nunes-6/10: Harvey Barnes scored two goals but neither were Nunes’ fault. He didnt have the impact he would’ve liked going forward and he never gave in over 90 minutes.

Ruben Dias-7/10: Scored Manchester City’s equaliser and tried to lift his team.

Josko Gvardiol-6/10: Had his hands full dealing with the physical threat posed by Nick Woltemade. He wasn’t City’s worst player by any stretch.

Nico O’Reilly-6/10: His rushed clearance led to Newcastle’s opening goal. He was threatening going forward but today’s performance wasn’t his best.

Nico-6.5/10: At times he was swamped in midfield but to his credit he never stopped working his tail off for his team.

Bernardo Silva-6/10: Toiled away in midfield but could influence the game as he would’ve liked.

Phil Foden-5.5/10: A poor performance from Foden when measured against his lofty high standards. He had his moments to make an impact but couldn’t seize them.

Rayan Cherki-6/10: I thought outside of Doku that Cherki was Manchester City’s next most dangerous attacking player. He created chances for his teammates although his work out of possession does need work.

Jeremy Doku-7/10: Doku was by far and away Manchester City’s most dangerous attacking player in the first half. He created four big chances but his teammates squandered them. Unfortunately he faded out of the game in the second half.

Erling Haaland-5/10: Haaland squandered two great opportunities and wasn’t at his best today.

Substitutes

Savinho-5.5/10: He came on and tried to do much. Wasted one good opportunity and his crossing was just off. Can’t knock his intent though.

Oscar Bobb-6/10: Looked like City’s most dangerous substitute but he didn’t have the moment he needed to create anything significant for his team.

Tijjani Reijnders-6/10: Took up some nice positions as City pressed for an equaliser but that was about it.

Omar Marmoush- N/A: He came on to late to have an impact.
