Manchester City have begun their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão tonight. A second half brace from Erling Haaland wrapped up all three points for Enzo Maresca’s side. The match was City’s first real test of the season and they passed it with flying colours. Although there were nervy moments in the second half it was a quality display from City in Portugal.

When the starting lineups were announced Enzo Maresca had made three changes to the starting lineup that beat Coventry City. Ayyoub Bouaddi made his first start for Manchester City. Phil Foden and the returning Matheus Nunes were also named in the starting lineup. Elliot Anderson, Abdukodir Khusanov and Iliman Ndiaye all dropped to the bench for tonight’s match.

First half.

In terms of how Manchester City set up to open the game, Antoine Semenyo was on the left wing with Phil Foden on the right. Rayan Cherki started as the number ten with Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi sitting in midfield. In the opening minute, Antoine Semenyo fizzed a quality cross across the FC Porto penalty area that no City player could get on the end of. What also stood out in the opening five minutes was how willing FC Porto were to press City’s players when Enzo Maresca’s side attempted to build up from the back.

As the game approached the 15-minute mark, neither side was able to create any openings. Manchester City were good in possession and were able to control FC Porto. Antoine Semenyo looked to be City’s most prominent attacking threat on the left wing. However, City were met by a well-organised FC Porto backline. Antoine Semenyo had the first shot on target from 25 yards out on the left, but it was hit straight at FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa. FC Porto did look to have a threat on the counter when they did seize possession in midfield, which Enzo Maresca’s side would have to be wary of.

Manchester City created their first real significant chance in the 21st minute. After a prolonged spell of possession, City played through the FC Porto defence. Phil Foden used some neat footwork to turn on the edge of the Porto area. He played the ball to Antoine Semenyo who played Foden in behind the FC Porto defence on the left. Foden played a quality cross to the back post where Erling Haaland got a good header on target. However, Diogo Costa made a quality save to tip Haaland’s header over the bar for a corner.

Erling Haaland missed another good chance over the bar in the 27th minute. Antoine Semenyo cut inside on the left wing and curled a quality cross with his right foot into a great position. Haaland got on the end of Semenyo’s cross but his header from around 10 yards out went over the bar. Rayan Cherki set Phil Foden up on the right for another shot on target. Foden got his shot away and across Diogo Costa from just inside the area, which the FC Porto keeper batted away well in the 28th minute.

Manchester City should have taken the lead in the 32nd minute. Enzo Maresca’s side had dropped FC Porto deep inside their own area and after some neat play on the right, Matheus Nunes was played into space on the right. Nunes got a low cross from the byline which found Erling Haaland. Haaland got a shot away back across the goal that Diogo Costa saved back into danger. Rayan Cherki got to the rebound which Costa kept out with another great save. So far, Diogo Costa was playing superbly well in goal for the hosts.

The game stopped after FC Porto midfielder Gabri Veiga went down after a strong challenge from Marc Guehi. Guehi decisively won a header in midfield and his elbow inadvertently struck Veiga in the face. The Spanish midfielder was down for some time to receive treatment for a head knock. Guehi’s challenge was a strong, but fair, one and after a three-minute delay the match resumed.

After three minutes of stoppage time, the halftime whistle blew. Manchester City had played well in the first half, however Diogo Costa was brilliant in goal for FC Porto, which meant that the game was locked at 0-0 at the interval.

Enzo Maresca’s side navigated a tricky opening period to gradually become the dominant side in the first half. They created a host of good chances but Diogo Costa was in inspired form in goal for the hosts. However, it must be said that Erling Haaland should’ve scored twice but his finishing was just off. Manchester City’s attacking play grew as the half wore on and the way they dropped FC Porto deep was extremely impressive. Also, the performance from Ayyoub Bouaddi in midfield caught the eye and as the game became feisty, Enzo Fernandez became prominent in the spot fires that broke out between the two teams before halftime. At the back, Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias were strong and contained the threat of the hosts very well.

Defensively, Manchester City were solid and well-organised. Their ability to catch FC Porto offside was impressive and it cancelled out three good openings for Francesco Farioli’s side. The only major concern was the yellow card that Josko Gvardiol received. Gvardiol was having a top battle with FC Porto winger William Gomes and that could be something to keep an eye on in the second half.

The second half begins and Manchester City strike straight away.

Manchester City took the lead almost immediately after the restart. Phil Foden received the ball on the right and surged through the middle with the FC Porto defence backpeddling. Foden played the ball to Antoine Semenyo, who played in Cherki behind the hosts’ defence. Cherki kept the ball in with a quality touch and played the ball back to Enzo Fernandez. Fernandez played a great cross, which Erling Haaland headed on target. His header went in off the post to give Manchester City a well-deserved lead in the 47th minute.

Gianluigi Donnarumma appeared to give away a penalty a minute later. FC Porto played a ball into the City area and Donnarumma left his line late and clattered Pepê after Pepê’s header went wide of the target. Initially, the referee awarded FC Porto a penalty, however that decision was overturned as Pepê was yards offside in the buildup to the chance.

Following Manchester City’s goal, FC Porto came to life. They began to push forward and midfielder Alan Varela curled an effort from just outside the City area inches wide of the post in the 57th minute. Francesco Farioli’s side had responded well to going behind and in the ten minutes following Haaland’s goal they were enjoying their best spell of the match.

Impressive FC Porto winger William Gomes would slide a shot wide of the near post in the 62nd minute. FC Porto played through City’s midfield from their own half and had space to work with. The ball was worked to Gomes who cut inside and fired a low left-footed shot wide of the near post. Enzo Maresca reacted to how the game was developing by bringing on Iliman Ndiaye and Elliot Anderson for Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.

Gianluigi Donnarumma narrowly avoids embarrassment as FC Porto press.

Iliman Ndiaye would curl an effort cutting inside from the left straight at Diogo Costa in the 65th minute. A minute later, Elliot Anderson played a back pass to Gianluigi Donnarumma which came up short and Donnarumma rushed to clear. Donnarumma’s clearance hit William Gomes and deflected just wide of the goal. Donnarumma perhaps should have reacted sooner to Anderson’s pass and the Italian keeper did look nervous in the second half.

Enzo Maresca brought on Mateo Kovacic and Rayan Ait-Nouri for Ayyoub Bouaddi and Phil Foden for the final 15 minutes. FC Porto continued to push for an equalizer but they were leaving space at the back for Manchester City to break into. The game was delicately poised and an open affair.

Rayan Ait-Nouri would have fired a great chance wide in the 85th minute which would have secured all three points for Manchester City. City broke out from the back and Iliman Ndiaye was picked out in space on the right by Erling Haaland, who played a superb ball from midfield to the Senegalese international. Ndiaye drove at the FC Porto defence and tried to play in Haaland. Ndiaye’s ball ricocheted off of an FC Porto defender and fell to Rayan Ait-Nouri. The Algerian international fired in a right-footed shot on goal from the edge of the area that went inches wide with Diogo Costa watching on.

Diogo Costa denied a curling effort from Elliot Anderson in the 90th minute. City won the ball on the edge of their own area and FC Porto made another fine save. From the subsequent corner, FC Porto’s defence initially cleared the ball before Mateo Kovacic won back possession on the left. The Croatian international played on the left and he teed up Haaland in the area, who beat Diogo Costa with a beautiful right-footed finish to wrap up the game for Manchester City in the 91st minute.

Diogo Costa would deny Enzo Fernandez his first Manchester City goal in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time. The Argentinian midfielder fired in a low drive that Costa got down exceptionally well to save. That would be the final significant moment of the match and City’s 2026-27 UEFA Champions League campaign began with an impressive win.

Manchester City have begun their 2026-27 UEFA Champions League campaign with an impressive victory. Coming away from the Estádio do Dragão with a 2-0 win over a quality FC Porto side is exactly what you hoped to see for Enzo Maresca’s side.

City dominated the first half and if not for Diogo Costa’s brilliance, Manchester City would have been out of sight by halftime. Following the interval, Erling Haaland set City on their way. FC Porto responded well to Haaland’s goal and it was great to see this City side dig deep and respond to FC Porto’s pressure. By the time that Erling Haaland sealed Manchester City’s win, they had shown great character to pick up all three points.

Special mention must go to Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias at the back. Their performances were superb and their organisation at the back helped City catch FC Porto offside on many an occasion. It isn’t a side of the game that creates headlines but it was vital to City’s win.

Manchester City have now won four games on the bounce in all competitions to begin the 2026-27 season. They will now enter Sunday’s Manchester derby full of confidence after passing their first real test of the 2026-27 season in an impressive fashion..
