With the summer transfer window set to open on June 15, Manchester City continues to be linked with a host of players. There is no doubt that City will look to bolster their squad for next season. It would seem that the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders will be in the market for two midfielders, a right-back, a winger, and a backup goalkeeper. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson is clearly Manchester City’s top target to bolster their midfield. It remains to be seen who else City will target to further strengthen their midfield.
A new report has named Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers as a potential City target. There is no doubting Rogers’ quality as a player. It just does seem unlikely right now that City will move for the England international.
Graeme Bailey has reported for TeamTalk that Manchester City has entered the race to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Furthermore, Bailey reports that Arsenal, Chelsea, PSG, and Bayern Munich are all interested in signing Rogers this summer. It is also reported that Aston Villa could demand over £100 million to sell one of their most important players.
It is also reported by Graeme Bailey that Morgan Rogers would be interested in returning to Manchester City. Bailey adds that City are looking to reinforce their attack this summer. Morgan Rogers is a player on Manchester City’s shortlist.
Morgan Rogers is a fine player, as his rise at Aston Villa has shown. The England international is a game-breaker with his ability to score goals and carry the ball from midfield. Typically, Rogers plays as an attacking midfielder or on the left, where he drifts centrally. Last season, Rogers scored 14 goals and added 12 assists in 55 appearances in all competitions. His powerful runs and emphatic finishing complement his physical attributes superbly. There isn’t a doubt over Morgan Rogers quality as a player. The issue seems to be how much he would cost and does he fit into the City squad?
Manchester City have Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders who can play as attacking midfielders. Also on the left wing, Jeremy Doku has made that position his own. Unless City sell a player like Tijjani Reijnders for example, where does Morgan Rogers fit? It is unlikely that he’d like to come to City to play primarily on a wing. So it may depend on who leaves Manchester City this summer whether or not they’d move for a player like Morgan Rogers.
The other issue is the transfer fee that Aston Villa would demand to sell Morgan Rogers. Rogers is an integral part of Unai Emery’s side. Graeme Bailey reports that a transfer fee of nearly £100 million may be required to buy Rogers from Aston Villa. Would City be willing to pay that? It is hard to see them being willing to do so. Especially considering that City has multiple areas of their squad they need to improve.
Morgan Rogers is the latest player to be named as a potential transfer target for Manchester City. Rogers is a quality player; that isn’t in doubt. However, it is hard to see where he’d fit into the City squad currently. Also, his price tag may see Manchester City look elsewhere this summer.
