Manchester City’s giant badge outside the Etihad Stadium has been defaced with an offensive slur in the wake of the financial verdict, according to The Sun.

An independent commission has found the club guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules across a nine-season period from 2009-10 to 2017-18, leaving them facing potential sporting sanctions.

The panel concluded City arranged sham contracts with commercial partners that artificially boosted revenue and cut costs, distorting the club’s finances by more than £900m over the period.

The club were also found guilty of most charges connected to a failure to cooperate with the investigation.

City have rejected the findings, insisting they are innocent and confirming they will appeal. They argue the commission’s opinion contains clear material errors in law, principle and fact, and describe the decision as unsafe.

The club have until Friday, the second of October to file their appeal. No sanction has yet been imposed, with a separate hearing to decide the punishment.
