Yesterday saw Manchester City announce the signing of Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens. Today the Premier League champions have followed that announcement by announcing the signing of Vitor Reis from Palmeiras. The signings of the two young centre-backs does give Pep Guardiola more defensive options to employ after Nathan Ake, John Stones, Manuel Akanji, and Ruben Dias have battled injuries this season.
Manchester City confirmed the signing of Vitor Reis on their official website. The young Brazilian centre-back has signed a four-and-a-half-year with the world champions. He joins the club after rising through the ranks at Brazilian club Palmeiras. In an interview published on mancity.com the Brazilian defender is excited to join Pep Guardiola’s squad. He said when asked about signing for Manchester City: “I’m excited to join Manchester City, one of the biggest clubs in the world. Everyone has seen the amazing achievements in recent seasons, and I want to make my mark as we seek more trophies. Working with Pep Guardiola is something every young player wants to do, and I know he can help me to develop into the best player I can be.”
The signing of Vitor Reis sees Manchester City add one of Brazil’s brightest young defensive prospects to their squad. Reis has impressed for Palmeiras since he burst onto the first-team scene with the Brazilian club. His natural leadership traits stand out when he plays. Given that he is 19 years of age, that is an impressive attribute for such a young player.
Besides his leadership ability, the young Brazilian centre-back is also blessed with tremendous ability. He is a composed defender and he plays with a poise that is well beyond his tender age. He also times his challenges well, which is a prerequisite skill for any centre-back. Reis is also strong in the air, and that skill should see him be well-suited to life in the Premier League.
In possession, there are shades of John Stones in how Vitor Reis plays. He is calm and composed on the ball and he possesses a wide range of passing. Reis does possess the ability to beat a man and pick out a pass but he has tended to play it safe in possession when playing for the Palmeiras first-team. But as he develops as a player it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him develop into a player who plays similarly to John Stones or Manuel Akanji.
Manchester City look to have landed another gem in Vitor Reis. Although he is young he does appear capable of stepping into Pep Guardiola’s squad straight away. Given the injury issues Manchester City’s centre-backs have faced this season the signing of Vitor Reis is a welcome one for the Premier League champions.
