One surprising transfer target to emerge for Manchester City this week was young Brazilian centre-back Vitor Reis. The young defender is highly regarded after impressing with Palmeiras. UOL Esporte reported earlier this week that City had opened talks with Palmeiras to sign Reis. Now a new report indicates that the world champions are pushing hard to sign the highly regarded centre-back. Manchester City’s push to sign Vitor Reis shows just how determined they are to add the centre-back to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Florian Plettenberg has reported via X that Manchester City and Palmeiras have continued negotiations for Vitor Reis. Furthermore, Plettenberg reports that negotiations between the two clubs have been positive and continue to advance. Lastly, Plettenberg adds that a deal between the two clubs is likely to happen.
Plettenberg’s report shows just how eager Manchester City are to bring Vitor Reis to the club. The young centre-back is considered one of South America’s top defensive talents and he plays in a position that City need help in. So far this season, City’s centre-backs have struggled with injury, and that’s had a detrimental effect on City’s play. The hope is that by signing Reis, he can provide cover at the back for the world champions. Fabrizio Romano has reported that City have finalised a deal for Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens. Now they appear determined to add Vitor Reis to their ranks.
There may, however, be a potential stumbling block in City’s bid to bring Vitor Reis to the club this month. Mario Cortegana and Sam Lee have reported for the Athletic that Palmeiras want Vitor Reis to remain at the club until after the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup which takes place in June. It remains to be seen if City can overcome this obstacle and bring Vitor Reis to the Etihad this month.
But what is apparent is that Manchester City are determined to sign Vitor Reis. It is clear that the Brazilian defender is highly rated by City’s hierarchy and could form part of City’s rebuild. No transfer deal is without complications and it now is a matter of waiting to see if City can conclude a deal with Palmeiras and sign Vitor Reis this month.
