Real Madrid’s hunt for a centre-back has taken a twist, with Diario AS reporting that Manchester City’s 24-year-old Josko Gvardiol has offered himself to them should a departure from the Etihad Stadium come to pass.
The club have struggled to secure primary targets, with pursuits of Marc Guehi, Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate fading, so alternative options are being explored.
Madrid’s interest in the Croatia international dates back more than three years, and they missed out when he joined City in 2023. Talks with his representatives were reported earlier this month.
Gvardiol has two years left on his deal in Manchester and a renewal is not close. His representatives are weighing potential exits, and he views Real Madrid as one of the clubs he would most like to join if he does move on.
He is not the only City player presented to Madrid in recent weeks, with Bernardo Silva also offered to the club, and Silva will be leaving the Etihad Stadium in the summer when his contract expires.
Madrid’s summer window will be closely watched, with a new manager almost certain, likely Jose Mourinho. Significant changes are needed to the first-team squad, and defence is among the priorities.
