Manchester City walked out of Bernabeu with one of their most significant European away victories overturning early deficit to beat Real Madrid 2 - 1 in gripping Champions League night.

That dumped fresh pressure on Xabi Alonso & propelled Pep Guardiola’s side into the top four of the new league phase standing.

Rodrygo briefly electrified the Bernabeu by ending 32 game scoreless run but City responded with the brutality of seasoned European giant:

  • Nico O’Reilly’s close range finish
  • Erling Haaland penalty flipped the script before half time
  • City’s second half control sealed historic win , only their second ever in Madrid..

The result, leaves the English champions on 13 point,, climbing into the automatic round of 16 seeds while Real Madrid slip down the table to 7th.

Madrid strike first, City hit back twice Merengue’s early wave

Inside 3 minutes, Vinicius tumbled in the box, the referee initially pointed to the spot before VAR downgraded it to free kick on the edge.

Valverde’s deflected strike whistled wide, Rodrygo tormented City’s left channel and Phil Foden’s clumsy challenge on the Brazilian earned him booking on 11 minute reflecting City’s early nerves.

Rodrygo ends his drought in style

And then came the explosion. Madrid counter pressed sharply , Bellingham pocketed the loose ball between the lines and threaded razor sharp pass into Rodrygo, one curl into the far corner.

Conceding snapped City into life and their equaliser came from signature Guardiola weapon "set piece".

1-1 (35’): Cherki’s inswinging corner found Gvardiol rising above the pack. Courtois saved but the rebound fell to O’Reilly who smashed in his first Champions league goal. 1-2 (43’): Minutes later , Rudiger hauled Haaland down in the area. VAR confirmed the penalty.

Haaland stepped up sent Courtois the wrong way and buried his 5th Champions League goal of the season.

Real Madrid pushed back after the interval but their attacks came with rising urgency & decreasing cohesion.

Bellingham’s big miss

Early in the half, Jude Bellingham attempted delicate chip over Donnarumma choosing flair over efficiency , It drifted over.

Guardiola’s control mode

City tightened their structure dropping deeper and forcing Madrid wide. Transitions became safer , Madrid’s attacks became predictable.

Alonso turned to Arda Guler & later Brahim Diaz and Endrick. Guardiola countered with fresh legs: Marmoush , Reijnders, Savinho and Ake to keep transitions sharp.

Courtois prevents heavier defeat

If Madrid stayed in the match , it was because of their goalkeeper.

Courtois produced:

  • A one on one stop against Doku
  • A late smother to deny another City counter
  • Multiple interventions that kept the Bernabeu’s hope alive

At the other end.. Vinicius headed wide & Endrick grazed the crossbar with late attempt. Real Madrid pushed but City’s defensive block and time management were ice cold.
