Jeremy Doku is looking forward to facing Liverpool on Sunday after Manchester City claimed a stylish 4-1 triumph over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening.
City maintained their unbeaten run in the UEFA Champions League this season as a brace from Phil Foden and a strike each from Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki helped the Blues see off Dortmund and rise to fourth place in the group-phase standings.
Pep Guardiola’s men have won 10 of their last 13 games in all competitions since September and there is no better time to be coming up against reigning champions Liverpool, who have endured an indifferent start to their Premier League title defence.
Jeremy Doku started against Dortmund and produced one of his best performances in a Manchester City shirt as he terrorised the visitors time and again on the left wing and set up Haaland for his 18th goal for the Blues in all competitions this season.
Doku struggled for regular minutes in the first half of the previous campaign but 2025 has been good to the Belgium international, who is slowly making a strong case to make the left attacking position his own.
Against Dortmund, the 23-year-old was a constant threat as he combined well with the likes of Foden, Haaland, Nico O’Reilly and Tijjani Reijnders in attack for a Manchester City who have slowly but surely gotten their mojo back in recent months after making a stuttering start to the 2025-26 season.
“I enjoyed it! I feel like I can still improve a lot more on my final passes, in front of the goal, but today I enjoyed it. And I’m just going to rest now because of the big game ahead (against Liverpool),” said Doku in conversation with TNT Sports after the win over Dortmund.
“We have to rest well, recover well and then we’re going to prepare well for that (game against Liverpool).”
Doku has been handed a new lease of life by Guardiola this season and the Belgian, who joined Manchester City from Rennes in 2023, is playing as if a significant weight has been lifted off his shoulders amid constant questions over his end product in front of goal.
After a big dressing room revamp this summer, Manchester City have embarked upon a new era under director of football Hugo Viana, who loosened the purse strings in the recent transfer window and has given Guardiola fresh ammunition to work with.
However, Haaland remains Manchester City’s biggest goal threat by a country mile and Doku was full of praise for his Norwegian teammate after the win on Wednesday. “In terms of numbers, Erling is unbelievable! But it’s so much more than just goals and assists, and he provides that for us and he’s so important for us,” Doku said on Haaland.
Doku will be hopeful that his performance against Dortmund will have secured him a starting spot against Liverpool on Sunday as second-placed Manchester City look to keep up the pressure on league leaders and title favourites Arsenal.
