UEFA Women’s Champions League football returned to The Joie Stadium for the first time since 2024/2025 but The Cityzens were unable to cap the occasion with three points.
Real Madrid created the first chance of the game as Carlotta Wamser lost the ball to Felicia Schröder, but her shot went wide. Athenea del Castillo then met a corner on the volley, but sent the ball well off target.
Khadija Shaw then fired over for the hosts before a Mary Fowler header hit the underside of the bar.
Real Madrid created another dangerous attack with Eva Navarro sending in a ball from the right, but it went slightly behind Schröder, who was in an offside position.
Home keeper Ayaka Yamashita then made an important save when Arianna Caruso’s shot was deflected and fell to Schröder. The Japanese international was able to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.
At the other end, Shaw saw a shot well blocked before the deadlock was broken by Real Madrid forward Linda Caicedo. She managed to direct the ball into the far corner, straight past Yamashita.
The Whites pushed for a second goal, but Schröder’s shot went flying over the bar.
Manchester City tried to respond and Lauren Hemp made a great run into the box and passed the ball to Yui Hasegawa, but she volleyed just wide.
In the 51st minute, Shaw fired the ball into the back of the net to level for the hosts. Hasegawa found the Jamaican international and it only took one touch for her to pick out the corner of the Real Madrid net.
Manchester City searched for a winning goal, but Hemp couldn’t pick out Shaw with a cross before Beth Mead headed narrowly over when in a decent position.
In the end, both sides claimed a share of the spoils and are level in the table on two points after two rounds of matches.
Manchester City are next in UEFA Women’s Champions League action on Thursday 29 October 2026 when Paris Saint-Germain are the visitors to The Joie Stadium.
