Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana faces an uphill battle to secure one of German football’s most exciting young talents, it has been reported.
City’s recruitment strategy in recent months has increasingly focused on securing high-ceiling talents, particularly as the squad undergoes a period of transition. With long-term planning well underway off the back of a difficult season, identifying elite-level wide players appears to be the next priority.
Moreover, with the unpredictable futures of several senior names and the ever-intensifying competition for young European talent, Manchester City are expected to be heavily involved in the battle for the continent’s next breakout winger.
RB Leipzig have become a known breeding ground for explosive talents, and consistently developing players who appear to fit City’s stylistic and athletic demands. It is little surprise, therefore, that scouts from across the Premier League have intensified their presence in Germany over recent months.
Yan Diomande, already viewed as one of the Bundesliga’s next major exports, has been monitored closely as he continues to excel domestically and in European competition.
And now, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg and Philipp Hinze, Manchester City are among a number of top clubs in England to have RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande in their sights, with Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham also mentioned.
Contrary to other reports, it is insisted that there are currently no concrete or advanced talks with any club at present, with the 19-year-old under contract with the Bundesliga club until 2030 with no release clause in the agreement.
A move for the teenager after the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America is said to be ‘possible’, although RB Leipzig are considering a fee of over €100 million for a player described as an ‘incredible talent’.
Looking ahead, any potential negotiations would likely depend on several factors, including Leipzig’s willingness to enter the market after the World Cup and the level of competition from Manchester City’s Premier League rivals.
Liverpool and Chelsea, both embedded in ongoing squad work through the market, are expected to push strongly for elite young attackers, while Tottenham’s long-term vision under Thomas Frank perhaps makes them a serious contender.
For Manchester City specifically, the pursuit may hinge on outgoings and tactical evolution. Should a senior winger seek a new challenge or should Pep Guardiola adjust his system to require more direct wide options, Diomande could become a priority target.
RB Leipzig’s valuation means only a handful of clubs can realistically compete, yet Manchester City remain firmly within that bracket should they choose to accelerate their interest.
