Manchester City frustratingly drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest last night at the Etihad Stadium. The result saw Pep Guardiola’s side fall seven points behind Arsenal, who sit top of the Premier League. Although City do have a game in hand on Mikel Arteta’s side, Antoine Semenyo’s and Rodri’s goals were canceled out by goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson for Forest at the Etihad. Elliot Anderson’s goal and overall performance were superb last night against Pep Guardiola’s side. A new report indicates that City’s potential move to sign Elliot Anderson is considered a “done deal”. Based on Anderson’s performance last night, it is clear exactly what he would potentially add to the Manchester City midfield.
James Marshment has published a new report for TeamTalk that covers Manchester City’s interest in signing Elliot Anderson this summer. Marshment relays quotes from TeamTalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey that Elliot Anderson joining Manchester City this summer is considered a “done deal in football circles.” Furthermore, Graeme Bailey reports that “numerous sources consider Elliot Anderson’s move to the Etihad a formality”, although there has been no formal announcement from either club, nor is one expected any time soon. It is also reported by James Marshment that Nottingham will ask for £90 million to sell Elliot Anderson this summer.
Elliot Anderson, alongside Morgan Gibbs-White, were by far and away Nottingham Forest’s best players last night. The Forest defence must also get a mention for their resolute performance at the Etihad. In the case of Anderson, it was easy to see why City would be so eager to sign him and exactly what he would add to Manchester City’s midfield last night.
Anderson was superb across the full 90 minutes for Nottingham Forest. Although his team didn’t have a lot of the ball, Anderson’s defensive positioning and overall work rate was superb. His ability to win duels stood out throughout last night’s match and his energy never faded at the Etihad. In possession, when the opportunity arose, Elliot Anderson was brilliant. His short passing was tidy, and his ability to play a quality long ball caught the eye. The movement in midfield when Forest had possession from Anderson did cause Manchester City trouble last night. Ultimately, it was Elliot Anderson who scored Nottingham Forest’s second goal of the evening with a superb low, long range strike. The play from Anderson to play a one-two with Callum Hudson-Odoi to create the chance was superb. It showed his creativity and attacking movement and his finish was sublime.
All told, Elliot Anderson showed exactly what he’d add to Manchester City’s midfield if they could sign him in the summer. The England international is a midfield workhorse both in and out of possession. His technical ability would slot straight into Pep Guardiola’s squad, and given the way the Premier League has evolved, Anderson would be a huge signing for City. The TeamTalk report indicates that City may potentially be on their way to signing Elliot Anderson. Based on last night and how well Anderson played, City simply have to sign him given what he’d add to City’s engine room.
