The Blues tasted their first piece of silverware in two seasons on Sunday after beating Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. They remain in the Premier League title race against the Gunners, who have a current nine point lead at the top, with an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Liverpool looming as well.

Hugo Viana has orchestrated the remake of Guardiola’s squad since stepping in as Manchester City’s director of football last summer, with the eight-time Premier League champions set to shuffle their pack once again come the end of the season.

Manchester City following transfer situation of Newcastle United star

Who are Man City planning to sign this summer?

City are believed to be prioritising the addition of a world-class midfielder ahead of the 2026-27 season, with club captain Bernardo Silva expected to leave when his contract runs out in June.

Rodri has attracted interest from Real Madrid and has cast doubt over his future at the Etihad Stadium, with the 29-year-old Ballon d’Or winner into the final 15 months of his current deal with no indication of a renewal anytime soon.

Mateo Kovacic faces an uncertain future in Manchester after enduring an injury-riddled campaign and having recently returned to full first-team training. The Croatian could also leave this summer, a year before his contract expires.

Manchester City have placed Nottingham Forest and England star Anderson at the top of their midfield wishlist for the summer, with confidence in the industry that a deal can materialise for a sum in the region of £80 million.

Where does interest in Tonali stand currently?

City are also understood to be closely monitoring Sandro Tonali‘s situation at St. James’ Park, with the Magpies and Eddie Howe languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table as they approach the end of a disappointing season.

European football is a near impossible prospect for the north-east outfit next season and their struggles have seen questions emerge over the future of Tonali, 25, who is entering the prime of his career amid interest from some of Europe’s best clubs.

According to new claims around the Etihad Stadium, any move from Manchester City for Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali would be in addition to a move for Anderson.

It is explained that officials at St. James’ Park are desperate to tie Tonali down to a new contract but believe City are ready to make a summer bid for the Italian, while the Magpies also retain a strong interest in James Trafford and Omar Marmoush.

Manchester City ‘clear frontrunners’ to sign £80 million Premier League midfielder

Manchester City’s strategy in recruiting new midfielders will heavily hinge on how the contract situations of Silva, Rodri and Kovacic play out, with Nico O’Reilly‘s versatility also giving Guardiola and his staff a new outlet in the middle of the park – should they prefer adding just one midfielder to their ranks this summer.
