Manchester City retain unbeaten record with UWCL draw against Bayern

A nail-biting two-all draw saw Manchester City maintain their unbeaten record so far this season with a tensely fought UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against German giants Bayern Munich.

Goals from Giulia Gwinn, Beth Mead and Carlotta Wamser, along with a Kerstin Casparij own goal, kept fans on the edge of their seats as the two sides got their European Campaigns started.

Man City play out 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich

The hosts got off to a stronger start, with several Bayern players creating good chances in the opening exchanges. It was no surprise then when Giulia Gwinn found the back of the net just 11 minutes into the tie. The goal reflected much of City’s play in the opening games of the season, with defensive errors costing the Blues on several occasions. The visitors’ woes were further compounded when Kerstin Casparij turned a cross from Pernille Harder into her own goal, giving the hosts a comfortable lead.

Beth Mead found the back of the net on the stroke of half-time; however, her goal was not without controversy. The hosts claimed that a pyrotechnic thrown onto the pitch had interfered with play.. Following a VAR check, the goal was allowed to stand with officials deciding the flare had not played a role in the goal. The two sides went into the break separated by only a single goal.

The second half began in much the same way as the first, with the home side dominating play. The visitors were awarded a spot kick in the 61st minute after Ena Mahmutovic clattered into Aoba Fujino. Bunny Shaw stepped up to take the spot kick in the 62nd minute. However, the Bayern keeper was more than equal to the Jamaican’s effort, palming the ball away. German international Carlotta Wamser bagged a crucial second goal for City with just four minutes remaining. The new signing capitalised on a well-worked play from Lauren Hemp and Laura Blindkilde-Brown to snatch a point for the visitors.
