Pep Guardiola and Manchester City can already start planning for life beyond Manuel Akanji, despite the centre-back only being away from the club on a loan deal.

The Switzerland international’s loan move to Inter last summer took on long-term implications through the structure of the agreement and the player’s desire to secure regular first-team football.

A loan agreement was struck with a reported €2 million transfer fee, and included a €15 million buy option – which would become mandatory under what was described at the time as certain ‘difficult’ conditions, linked to involvement and the club’s overall success.

Further reporting since has consistently indicated that Inter’s satisfaction with Akanji has only grown, with the club described as “very happy” with his integration, leadership qualities, and an ability to adapt quickly to the tactical demands of Serie A.

Akanji himself has spoken openly about feeling settled in Italy, enjoying regular football, and being keen to stay.

This development also fits into City’s defensive reshuffle amid further uncertainty surrounding the futures of players such as John Stones, with the club already recalling Max Alleyne from a loan at Watford and secured the signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Now, according to the information of Fabrizio Romano, Inter ‘have no doubts’ and maintain their plan to activate a €15 million buy option clause from Manchester City for Manuel Akanji in June.

This stance from Inter represents a significant step towards finalising Akanji’s long-term future, while a €15 million permanent transfer for Manchester City would offer clarity and financial certainty on the matter.

A permanent exit for Manuel Akanji would also close the chapter on a player who played an important role during key phases of Pep Guardiola’s tenure, most notably the Treble-winning season of 2022/23.

For Inter, the move would secure a proven, Champions League-level defender at a relatively modest fee in today’s market, and the defender’s experience, composure in possession, and tactical intelligence fit perfectly with their own ambitions both domestically and in Europe.
