Manchester City will target a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window following Rodri’s season-ending injury.

Pep Guardiola’s side have fallen five points behind Liverpool in the Premier League and have lost four consecutive games in all competitions for the first time in 18 years.

The Citizens’ poor form has coincided with Rodri’s absence after the Ballon d’Or winner was ruled out for the campaign in September with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

City are now set to address the gap in their midfield and will look to strengthen their squad when the winter window opens in the New Year.

Football Insider are reporting that Martin Zubimendi is the club’s top target. The Spain international has a release clause of €60m in his contract with the Spanish side, though turned down a move to the Premier League in the summer.

Liverpool informed Sociedad of their intention to activate the release clause, but Zubimendi rejected the move in favour of remaining with his boyhood side. However, Sociedad have had a mixed start to the season and it was this week announced that director of football Roberto Olabe will leave his role in June 2025.

Atalanta’s Ederson is also viewed as a potential option. The Brazil international impressed as the Italian side on the Europa League last season and has attracted interest from several suitors in the Premier League.
