Premier League champions Manchester City have now found out how much they need to pay in order to sign Celtic attacker, Kyogo Furuhashi.

Links between Pep Guardiola’s side and the Celtic forward come in light of the club’s ongoing search for a direct replacement for Julian Alvarez, following the Argentine’s big-money move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a long-term agreement at Metropolitano, with the club from the Spanish capital sanctioning a €75 million initial transfer fee, potentially rising to €95 million through add-ons.

City recognise that while the deal was no doubt too good to turn down, and the player’s wishes of becoming a mainstay first-choice striker needed to be respected, they are now left requiring suitable support for Erling Haaland in their own leading centre-forward position.

But finding a player who is not expecting consistent first-team game time but also of the standards required is proving to be a challenge, with their final two names on a shortlist including Celtic’s star frontman.

According to the information of The Times’ Michael Grant, while City have not definitely committed to moving for another striker this summer, believing that they may have options in their squad to cover the position, Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi is ‘under consideration’.

However, it is made clear that the Scottish Premier League champions would hold out for a club-record fee – over £24.7 million – given Kyogo’s effectiveness, impact and popularity since he was signed in 2021 for £4.5 million.

Furuhashi has one familiar face already working within the Etihad Stadium, and that could potentially have an impact on Manchester City’s approach, with his former Vissel Kobe head coach, Juanma Lillo acting as Pep Guardiola’s number two at present.

Kyogo Furuhashi was a regular under Juanma Lillo in the Japanese game, playing 13 times for the club and the coach, scoring five goals and assisting five more in the Spaniard’s seven-month spell in charge of the team.

It remains to be seen who else Manchester City hold an interest in this summer, should they believe that the 29-year-old is not the right profile for the role available alongside Erling Haaland this season.
