Hugo Viana and Manchester City will ‘100 per cent’ sign a brand new central midfielder during the upcoming summer transfer window, reports Fabrizio Romano.
The update comes as the Etihad Stadium’s recruitment team target their second full summer window since Hugo Viana‘s formal appointment as Sporting Director – succeeding Txiki Begiristain at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
With the club continuing to chase a historic quadruple – including a high-stakes Champions League last-16 double-header against Real Madrid – the focus has somewhat been simultaneously placed on future-proofing a midfield that has seen plenty of change already in the last 12 months.
Speculation regarding targets has been rife in recent weeks, particularly as the club looks to provide a long-term succession plan to the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva – with the latter out of contract this summer.
While the January arrival of Antoine Semenyo addressed attacking depth and Marc Guehi bolstered defence, the summer of 2026 is widely expected to be the period where City executes an engine room refresh to maintain their top-level domestic and European ambitions.
Now, according to the information of Fabrizio Romano, while Manchester City were never in talks for Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha and the player was never on the club’s shortlist in midfield, the Etihad Stadium club will ‘100 per cent’ sign a midfielder this summer.
For Nmecha, the 25-year-old has reportedly now signed new long-term deal at Dortmund until June 2030 amid links to the Premier League and particularly Manchester City earlier this month.
The dismissal of rumours concerning Felix Nmecha suggests City are looking for a different profile of midfielder, with some reports strongly linking the Blues with the £90 million-rated Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson.
The England international produced a magnificent performance at the Etihad Stadium in early March, and the player is already being viewed by many as an ideal Hugo Viana signing – young, tactically versatile, and proven in the Premier League.
As the summer approaches, the identity of the ‘100 per cent’ guaranteed signing will remain one of the biggest talking points, although the incoming name will likely be expected to make an immediate first-team impact.
