Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will need to push for a summer exit amid interest from Manchester City and Manchester United, as per a new report.

The 25-year-old is expected to leave St. James’ Park after a disappointing season for Eddie Howe‘s side, who sit in 12th place in the Premier League and are set to miss out on European football for the 2026-27 campaign.

Tonali has established himself as one of the best midfielders in England under Howe and has attracted interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal in the last six months.

With a departure likely this summer, the aforementioned trio are set to line up and compete to add the Italy international to shore up their respective midfield ranks for the seasons to come.

Manchester City ‘very attentive’ to Sandro Tonali situation as €100M Newcastle United exit looms

Man City interest in Tonali explained

Manchester City are bracing themselves for a major summer clear-out as Bernardo Silva approaches the final few months of his current deal, with no expectation of a renewal.

Rodri has also flirted with the prospect of joining Real Madrid as he enters the last 12 months of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. City officials will sit down with the Spain international in the coming months in the hope of securing his long-term future.

However, executives at the Etihad Stadium are prioritising the acquisition of at least one world-class midfielder this summer and have placed Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson at the top of their wish list.

Anderson will not have a dearth of options should he leave Forest this summer however, and Manchester City are also keeping close tabs on Tonali’s situation in Tyneside as director of football Hugo Viana progresses his revamp of the first-team squad in the upcoming transfer window.

Mitten: Tonali will need to force Newcastle exit

As reported by The Athletic’s Andy Mitten, Newcastle United have no plans of sanctioning a sale for Tonali at present and the midfielder will need to push for an exit this summer.

City need to bolster their midfield ranks this summer and are also monitoring Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton – a player liked at the Etihad Stadium but another prospect who will not have a shortage of suitors should the Eagles look to cash in on him.

Manchester City could witness all of Silva, Rodri, Mateo Kovacic and Kalvin Phillips leave the club this summer, with uncertainty also looming over Pep Guardiola‘s future at the club.

It remains unknown where Tonali’s preference lies as the midfielder maps the next steps of his career but it is worth noting that suitor clubs will want to avoid getting involved in a bidding war for the Italian – as and when he expresses a firm desire for an exit.
