A new report has revealed the makeup of Pep Guardiola’s goalkeeping pecking order after the departure of long-serving Ederson to Fenerbahce.

Ederson completed a £12.1 million switch to Turkey on the final day of the summer transfer window after eight illustrious seasons at the Etihad Stadium, where the 31-year-old won six Premier League titles amongst a plethora of silverware.

The Brazil international had entered the final year of his Manchester City contract and was named on the bench for a 2-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend, with James Trafford retaining his place in net despite making the headlines for all the wrong reasons the previous week against Tottenham.

Manchester City struck a deal with Fenerbahce in the final days of the window and allowed Ederson to travel to Turkey on Monday, subsequently securing the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain as a replacement for £26 million.

Donnarumma’s arrival to the Etihad Stadium completes a complete overhaul of Manchester City’s goalkeeping department from the previous campaign, with the Blues also retaining Stefan Ortega Moreno as fourth-choice goalkeeper.

Trafford returned to his boyhood club in July as Manchester City activated a buy-back clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, with the England U-21 international back at his youth club after two years of regular playing opportunities at Burnley.

Whilst Ederson remained at Manchester City, it was understood that the Brazilian would retain his position as the starting goalkeeper and Trafford would challenge the six-time Premier League winner for the number one spot.

The uncertainty around Ederson’s future in the final stages of the transfer window saw Trafford begin the season between the sticks for City, starting each of their opening three Premier League games – a win against Wolves and back-to-back losses to Tottenham and Brighton.

However, the sensational capture of Donnarumma on deadline day has raised questions over who will be Manchester City’s number one goalkeeper for the 2025-26 campaign – and what the Italy international’s arrival could mean for Trafford’s prospects ahead.

Football Insider have reported that Donnarumma is likely to pick up the baton from Ederson and step in as Manchester City’s number one, with Trafford and Ortega Moreno set to act as reliable back-up choices for the former Paris Saint-Germain man.

Manchester City also replaced Scott Carson – who left the club in June after coming to the end of his contract – with Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea, with the 33-year-old also named in the club’s UEFA Champions League A-List squad – alongside Donnarumma, Trafford and Ortega Moreno.

Donnarumma completed medical duties in Italy on Monday and his move to Manchester City on a five-year contract – with the option of an additional 12 months – was confirmed on Tuesday, with the Italian set to travel to England to join up with Pep Guardiola and his new teammates after the September international break.
