A new report has revealed the name that Manchester City had identified as their number one choice to replace Ederson, had the Brazilian found an exit this summer.

The 31-year-old Brazil international had been heavily linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium following a seven-year stay with the club, targeting a fresh challenge and potential a move away from European football entirely.

Two clubs in particular showed a keen interest in negotiating with City, whilst simultaneously willing to make Ederson the highest-paid goalkeeper in world football. However, with the Premier League champions standing firm on their valuation, no deal came to fruition.

Ederson himself has since confirmed his place within the Manchester City side for the forthcoming season, featuring multiple times for the club during their pre-season tour of the United States, and starting the recent FA Community Shield against Manchester United.

But such were the worrying beliefs within the club that they could lose Ederson to the Middle-Eastern football division that plans were put in place over who Manchester City would turn to as a replacement within the goalkeeping department.

According to the information of transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano, Werder Bremen’s Michael Zetterer had been identified as Manchester City’s number one replacement option in the event that Ederson had left the club earlier this summer.

With Manchester City’s mainstay goalkeeper now confirming his stay at the Etihad Stadium beyond the ongoing market, Zetterer is now also expected to start the new season with his current club despite ongoing interest from three other Premier League teams.

Reports from German media earlier this summer had indicated that Manchester City had their eye on Werder Bremen’s shot-stopper as a potential new back-up goalkeeper, should Stefan Ortega be promoted in the event of an Ederson departure.

There were also claims of Zetterer having a release clause within his Bundesliga contract, which expired in the middle of June, by which point both Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad were both still monitoring Ederson’s situation.

Instead, there remains a very real possibility that Manchester City could renew the contracts of all three of their shot-stoppers this summer, with both Stefan Ortega and Scott Carson having already renewed their respective agreements.
