According to ESPN, Manchester City’s Rodri is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee.

Sources close to the site claim tests that were conducted on Monday morning confirmed the injury, after the Spanish midfielder was substituted in a 2-2 after just 21 minutes in City’s enthralling 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The news will come as a significant blow for The Citizens, who have not lost in the last 48 Premier League games in which Rodri has started, whilst losing four in their 11 matches without him during that time – amassing a points per game (PPG) of 2.6 with the midfielder and 1.9 without him.

The Manchester club claimed the title with 2.4 PPG last campaign, versus runners-up Arsenal’s 2.34, suggesting that if Pep Guardiola’s side are unable to recover their form without Rodri, and if The Gunners can maintain their current performances, Mikel Arteta’s side could be considered front runners for their first Premier League title since 2004.

City, who have typically utilised Mateo Kovačić their defensive midfielder in Rodri’s absence, are yet to officially confirm the exact duration of the injury themselves, but, even if it is not for the entirety of the current campaign, the 28-year-old is set for a long spell on the sidelines.

Guardiola will undoubtedly discuss the matter in the pre-match build up to his upcoming two fixtures, where the Premier League Champions will first play Watford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening, before travelling to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United in the league on Saturday.
