Manchester City won the opening Manchester Derby of the season at Old Trafford this afternoon, thanks to a second-half goal from Erling Haaland.

Phil Foden was shown a red card inside the first half-hour when he kicked out at Bruno Fernandes, becoming the first City player to be sent off in this fixture since 2006. Both Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo struck the post either side of the break, before Haaland broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when he tapped home from close-range.

The Norwegian’s goal proved to be the difference between the sides, with Enzo Maresca’s men picking up the first set of bragging rights for the season.

Michael Carrick made one change from his side’s 2-2 draw with Everton last time out in the Premier League, after a somewhat rotated side beat Sabah FK 4-0 on Thursday night in the UEFA Champions League; that change saw Patrick Dorgu replace Luke Shaw at left-back. Meanwhile, Maresca made one change from his side’s 2-0 win over Porto in midweek, with Elliot Anderson replacing Ayyoub Bouaddi alongside Enzo Fernández in the middle of the park.

Lisandro Martínez registered the first shot on target of the day after seven minutes, when his strike from range was comfortably saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Other than that half-chance, the first-half largely passed both teams by, with the only true flashpoint coming in the 22nd minute, when Foden saw red after he kicked out at Fernandes following a challenge on the byline.

Marcus Rashford came closest to breaking the deadlock before the break, when his 45th-minute free-kick beat Donnarumma but rebounded off the post, meaning the two sides headed into half-time with the score still at 0-0.

Maresca turned to his bench during the break, replacing Rayan Cherki with Iliman Ndiaye. The woodwork came to City’s rescue again early in the second half; this time it was Kobbie Mainoo’s strike that rattled the woodwork. Rashford went close again moments later, lashing his shot into the side-netting.

United continued to push for an opener as the hour mark approached, with Matheus Cunha firing narrowly over the bar. Haaland opened the scoring for City minutes later; on-field officials initially ruled him offside, but a VAR review upheld the Norwegian’s ninth Manchester Derby goal since joining the Citizens in 2022.

Carrick replaced Youri Tielemans with Benjamin Seško following the goal, but it was Fernandes who looked to bring United level moments later, but saw his effort beaten away by Donnarumma. Bryan Mbuemo also came close shortly after, but flicked his header wide of the target.

Fernández saw his penalty claim waved away after he went to ground inside the area under a challenge from Harry Maguire; a brief spat followed, and both were shown yellow cards.

Nico O’reilly was then introduced from the bench, replacing Fernández in midfield, who was walking a tightrope following his booking. The hosts also made a change, bringing on Joshua Zirkzee for Rashford as the hunt for an equaliser entered the final five minutes of regular time.

The Reds continued to push as they entered additional time, but but Donnarumma pulled off a show-stopping save in the final moments to deny Mbeumo’s golden opportunity, meaning the Citizens took all three points back to the Etihad.
