Diogo Costa is ready to leave FC Porto this summer as he looks to take the next step in his career, with the Premier League his preferred destination. Manchester United are reportedly keen on landing the Porto star.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, he has expressed a desire to embrace a new challenge after six seasons as Porto’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Costa missed the Club World Cup due to a thigh injury but remains highly rated across Europe.
Ruben Amorim knows Costa well from the national team set-up and is believed to have identified him as a key signing.
Concerns remain over André Onana’s form and fit under Amorim’s style of play.
Costa, who is known for his calm distribution and command of the penalty area, is seen as a strong upgrade.
United are not alone in their admiration.
Manchester City are also tracking Costa, with Ederson expected to leave for the Saudi Pro League. However, the player is understood to favour a move where he can be first choice from day one.
Costa has a release clause of €75 million, but Porto may accept offers in the region of €60 million due to market realities.
Talks have not yet begun, but interest is expected to accelerate after the European Championship.
The goalkeeper has spent six seasons as Porto’s number one, winning multiple domestic trophies and becoming one of the standout performers in Liga Portugal.
Despite his strong emotional ties to the club, Costa is ready to follow in the footsteps of other Porto stars who left in their prime for a bigger platform. A move to Old Trafford would fulfil a long-standing ambition.
Porto president André Villas-Boas will have a major role in any negotiations. The club has already started planning for Costa’s potential departure, with Claudio Ramos waiting in the wings.
United’s goalkeeping situation is one of several areas being addressed by Amorim as he looks to reshape the squad. Costa’s signing would represent a significant statement early in the new manager’s tenure.
With the player open to the move and Amorim pushing internally, United are now firmly in the frame as the Diogo Costa transfer saga gathers pace.
