Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox has called new signing Matheus Cunha one of the most exciting forwards in English football.
United have announced the £62.5m signing of Cunha from Wolves, with the 26-year-old signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford. The Red Devils activated the release clause in Cunha’s contract at Molineux after an excellent two-and-a-half year spell with Wolves.
Last season, Cunha scored 15 times in the Premier League, equalling the single-season record for a Brazilian player in the division. He added six assists, in a Wolves side that battled against relegation for much of the campaign.
Cunha joins a Manchester United side that struggled for goals last season. Wilcox has revealed that the versatile forward was a primary target for head coach Ruben Amorim.
He said the club are delighted to have secured one of the Premier League’s ‘most exciting and productive’ players early in the transfer window.
“Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer. We are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window,” he told the club’s official website.
“He has proved his ability to succeed in the Premier League as one of the most exciting and productive forwards in England during his time at Wolves, and, before that, in Spain and Germany.
“He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.”
United remain in negotiations for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo and are also interested in a goalkeeper and centre-forward.
