Manchester United have announced the signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

A new striker was United’s priority heading into the summer transfer window. Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to score frequently, as the Red Devils ended the campaign with fewer league goals than every non-relegated Premier League team bar Everton.

United missed out on the likes of Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres, and Victor Osimhen before making making Sesko their primary target.

Newcastle United landed the first punch with formal offer for Sesko. They were also prepared to hand the player a lucrative contract. However, the Slovenian talent rejected the Magpies’ proposal in favour of a move to Old Trafford.

United quickly reached an agreement with Leipzig over Sesko’s transfer fee. Now, the 22-year-old has completed all the formalities to join the Mancunians.

Manchester United announce Sesko transfer

In their official statement, United revealed that the Slovenia international has signed a contract until June 2030.

Speaking to club’s official website, Sesko said: “The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future.

“When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.”

Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell drove United’s pursuit of Sesko. Still, it was director of football Jason Wilcox who put the finishing touches to hand Ruben Amorim his fourth summer signing.

Wilcox said: “Benjamin possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football.

“We have followed Benjamin’s career closely; all of our data analysis and research concluded that he has the required qualities and personality to thrive at Manchester United.”

Manchester United land Sesko after a long chase

Sesko has been on United’s radar since his time at Domžale, impressing the club’s scouts with his raw talent and physicality.

However, they were beaten to the then-16-year-old’s signing by RB Salzburg, who struck a €2m deal with the Slovenian outfit.

The Mancunians tried to sign Sesko in 2023 as well. However, Vivell convinced him to move to Leipzig.

The decision certainly proved fruitful for the youngster. Over the past two seasons, he has scored the most goals of any player under the age of 23 in Europe’s top five leagues.
