Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi has been well documented; the England international was minutes away from becoming a Red in the summer.

The deal to bring Guehi to Anfield wasn't finalised however, and the defender remained at Crystal Palace.

Talk of a new deal to bring Guehi to Merseyside has swirled since the summer but, with only six months remaining on his contract a free transfer next summer seemed the most likely outcome.

Now, with Manchester United announcing the departure of manager Ruben Amorim, Liverpool could gain the upper hand and secure a deal for Guehi sooner rather than later.

Man United sacking Amorim could be perfect for Liverpool

Speculation linking Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner to the Man United job has been rife this season, and if he is the man to replace Amorim at Old Trafford it could be perfect for Liverpool.

Glasner was one of the main reasons the Guehi deal fell through in the summer, with the Austrian reportedly threatening to leave the club if his captain was sold before an adequate replacement could be brought in.

If Glasner did leave Palace to become the United manager, Liverpool would stand a much better chance at securing a deal for Guehi and Palace may be looking to cash in to avoid losing the 25-year-old for free in July.

Are Liverpool likely to move for a central defender in January?

Guehi isn’t the only name being linked with Liverpool this winter, Joel Ordonez and Alessandro Bastoni have been repeated linked as well as a number of other targets who are on Richard Hughes’ shortlist.

The Reds have shown that they will move for a target in the winter window if the conditions of the deal are right too, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz both arrived at the club in January.

With only six months remaining on Ibrahima Konate’s contract and uncertainty around Joe Gomez’s future it would make a lot of sense for Liverpool to act pre-emptively and sign a new central defender as soon as possible.

Glasner is by no means guaranteed the Manchester United job, but if he does leave Palace in January it would become a lot easier for Liverpool to finally sign Marc Guehi.
