In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that Manchester United could move in for Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta this January. It is believed that the Red Devils are eyeing a move to bring the French talent to Old Trafford, but only if they lose another forward this winter.

Mateta’s Impressive Form In The Premier League

Mateta enjoyed a decent run of form at the London club in the previous campaign when he put in a string of impressive displays for them in the final third. The French striker scored 16 goals and secured three assists in 50 matches for the Eagles last season in all competitions.

The 29-year-old is currently one of the most feared centre-forwards in the Premier League. Therefore, the Red Devils would do well to snap him up next year.

His current deal at Selhurst Park will expire at the end of this campaign, which could give Man United a chance to sign him on the cheap this January or on a free transfer next summer.

Should Manchester United Boss Michael Carrick Go For Mateta?

Mateta excels at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has the vision to engineer the odd chance for his teammates in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet.

Standing at 1.92m, the French talent is a strong presence in the air as well. He has already proven his worth in the Premier League and won’t take any time to adjust to life at Old Trafford if the Red Devils manage to land him next year.

Mateta would add more firepower to Man United boss Michael Carrick’s frontline. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Mancunian club in the coming years.

At 29, Mateta is still playing in his prime and could be a real asset for Man United in the short term. He will also help the Red Devils compete across all fronts over the next few seasons. Therefore, Carrick would be wise to go for a striker of his quality and experience this January or when he becomes a free agent at the end of this campaign.
