Red Devils face bitter rivals in Sunday tea-time kick off
Ruben Amorim has confirmed that neither Noussair Mazraoui nor Lisandro Martinez will be fit enough to face Liverpool this weekend.
Manchester United return to Premier League action with a trip to their bitter rivals on Sunday, and while the Red Devils have the vast majority of their first-team squad fit, there are still a couple of injury concerns.
They are two former Ajax players, both signed by Amorim’s predecessor Erik ten Hag, Martinez and Mazraoui.
Martinez has not played all season after suffering an ACL tear back in February against Crystal Palace.
The Argentine is nearing a full recovery, but has only just joined in team training, says Amorim.
“Licha is not available,” the Portuguese said of the centre-back. “Near [to a return] but he is just returning.”
As for versatile defender Mazraoui, Amorim simply said that he didn’t know when the Moroccan would be back fit.
Mazraoui has played just three games all season, and has been struggling with a thigh injury.
Bruno Fernandes did not train with the squad on Thursday after Amorim deemed his captain to need more time to recover from international duty, but he is expected to be involved at Anfield this weekend.
“The international players are ready but we need to give them more time,” Amorim continued.
“The guys who are returning are ready to play.”
United are 10th in the Premier League table, with three wins from their first seven games.
They defeated Sunderland 2-0 in their last outing, and host Brighton after their trip to Merseyside.
