Bruno Fernandes has sent a message to Manchester United fans that he and his team-mates are determined to make up for last season’s struggles.
The Reds suffered defeat in the Community Shield after a penalty shootout, with Man City winning 7-6.
Both teams were impacted by injuries and late additions to the squad after international tournaments, so it was another opportunity for players to get minutes under their belt before the 2024/25 Premier League campaign kicks-off.
United still managed to give a good account of themselves. The Reds created the best chances but paid the price for not putting them away.
After 90 minutes, United were the better team but a lapse in contention at the back gave Bernardo Silva a chance to equalise late on. His goal cancelled out Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning strike which had given United a deserved lead.
Fernandes spoke to club media after United missing out on winning the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday. He said the players are determined to entertain the fans this season and put last term’s struggles behind them.
“I think, when the season starts and you come back, there is always that excitement from yourself; I think we have been feeling that from the fans too,” Fernandes told MUTV.
“Now it is on us [the players] to make that excitement stay with us. We have to keep creating these types of things, these types of moments to make the fans with us, because they come to the games to be entertained.
“We want to entertain them and we want to win games because they want to see their team winning and there is no person in the world that wants to win more than everyone in that dressing room.
“We are going to give everything to make the fans enjoy this season. We know that it was a really bad and tough season for them last season, as it was for us, so we want to make it different.”
United kick off the Premier League season next Friday at home to Fulham.
