Manchester United suffered a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, throwing away a two-goal lead and ending one of the club’s remarkable records.

United had never lost a home game in the Premier League era after going two goals ahead, but that run finally came to an end against Brighton. The last time they suffered such a defeat at Old Trafford was in September 1976, when Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to win 3-2.

The result also marked the first time since May 1984 that United had lost a home match in all competitions after holding a half-time lead, with Ipswich Town the opponents on that occasion.

Their record since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement makes Wednesday’s collapse even more surprising. United had taken a two-goal advantage in 145 matches since 2013, winning 143 and drawing the other two.

Brighton’s comeback therefore brought an extraordinary statistic to an end, while adding further frustration to United’s difficult start. The defeat also means United have now suffered consecutive losses, following their derby defeat to Manchester City.

They will look to respond when they travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in their final match before the international break.
