Manchester United eyeing Massimiliano Allegri as possible Erik ten Hag replacement

Manchester United are “flirting” with the idea of giving Massimiliano Allegri the reins at Old Trafford in the event they sack Erik ten Hag.

After a disappointing start to the new season, which saw United lose 3-0 to Liverpool at home, Ten Hag has got himself more breathing space by leading the Red Devils to back-to-back wins, including the incredible 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley in the League Cup.

As far as the Dutchman’s future is concerned, INEOS are still backing him publicly, having only extended his contract ahead of the new term.

However, Calciomercato.it (via Sport Witness) claims United are interested in Allegri, and behind the scenes, they have been quietly sounding out the Italian tactician about possibly succeeding Ten Hag should the ex-Ajax man fail to make things work in Manchester.

The Italian outlet say “little birds” have been making overtures towards the 57-year-old, who most recently managed Juventus.

The Old Lady decided to replace the experienced manager with Thiago Motta ahead of the new season.

Now, without a club, Allegri is understood to be prepared to return to the hot seat swiftly.

He has set his sights on a more important managerial role, as such he is willing to wait for United rather than move to the Saudi Pro League.

The report adds Allegri has a “high level of approval” with decision-makers at United, and the “channel” between both parties remains open.

The Italian is a serial winner, having led both AC Milan and Juve to Serie A titles. However, his rigid style of play and a disappointing second stint in Turin raise plenty of question marks on his suitability for the Premier League giants.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report suggesting Thomas Tuchel is “first in line” if INEOS do decide to search for a new manager.

The former Bayern Munich boss even held talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe during the summer but United eventually decided to place their trust in Ten Hag.
